Topical Authority: The Compounding Asset
The study
A study of 12 domains and 332 URLs examined the relationship between Topical Authority scores and organic search performance. Topical Authority measures the semantic depth of a site's coverage on a given subject. How comprehensively and consistently a domain covers a specific topic area.
What high topical authority looks like in the data
Domains scoring above 80 on a 100-point Topical Authority scale achieved significantly faster organic search visibility compared to low-TA domains. They were more likely to receive their first click within three weeks of publishing new content and reached impression milestones substantially faster.
Why it compounds
Every piece of content you publish on a topic makes the next piece rank faster. High topical authority tells search engines and AI models that your site is the authoritative source on a subject. Once established, this authority is extremely difficult for competitors to displace. The businesses that build deep topical coverage now will be the default answers in both search and AI for years.
Key findings:
- Domains with TA scores above 80 achieve faster visibility and first clicks
- High-TA domains reach impression milestones significantly faster
- Topical authority compounds: each new piece accelerates the next
- Building depth before breadth is the highest-leverage SEO strategy available
